Silent Service: Extras

“Her Majesty’s Shipgirl Venturer reporting in. By orders of the Royal Navy Special Test and Evaluation Command I have been assigned here to advise and educate -“

Yeah. Welcome. Could you take a seat over there next to Surcouf?

“Pardon me ma’am but I was not finished -“

Gimme the orders and let’s take a look.

“…the lot of you on all matters pertaining Royal Navy submarine operations in the Second World War.”

Hmm… Yeah… No can do. Sorry. You’re about half a year too late, hon. The book’s already being finalized.

“Outrageous! A book on submarines without the contributions of the greatest naval power in the history of mankind?”

Didn’t we already cover this before? Sorry. No Royal Navy subgirls in the book.

“Well, I never! What am I supposed to do then?”

Hang around? There’s plenty of space. You can bunk in my room while we get you situated. Besides, I know the guy in charge of “the lot of you” and he doesn’t do things for no reason. Though knowing how things are, it probably got lost in the mail, too.

“…”

“Ma’am?”

It’s Tautog. Geez. You’re making me feel old.

“Tautog?”

Yeah?

“With all due respect I feel it is necessary to directly lodge a complaint -“

(Also you can totally stop the quotes now. It’s kinda, distracting. Like, we know it’s you. You have a different color and all.)

” – to the higher-ups of the higher-ups. It is absolutely unfathomable to me that the Royal Navy would be omitted. Britain stood alone against Fascism during the onset of the Second World War. The Soviet Union may act high and mighty but without our maintenance of the Arctic convoy Stalin would have been overrun in the first year! For that matter, who cracked Enigma? Who, might I ask, provided radar to you Americans? Who came to rescue the beleaguered Americans during the disastrous North African campaign?

Yet what do we have? A few comments here and there, some design stuff, and an insanely large pile of sniping at British naval policy! I’ll have you know that Britain was nearly starved into submission by the U-boats. Of course there would be impetus to limit submarines! By Jove, I -“

Uh huh. Hey, sorry. What’s your name again?

“Her Majesty’s Shipgirl Venturer. Also I was not finished! There are plenty of things you should consider. Aviation? The Battle of Britain is the stuff of legends! Naval engagements? Look no further than the hunt for Bismarck. Culture? Rationing left such a permanent mark on our culinary tradition that many of our recipes today can be traced back to the Second World War!”

Right. Venturer. Listen. You’re here too late.

“Well!”

Hey. Look. Unless you can find a way to get Sima to illustrate you in record time, throw enough books at Morgane and K9 so they can write you out accurately, and then get in a skimpy enough outfit for Sune, you’re probably not going to make it into the book.

“I have books! Plenty of them! How do I throw -“

No throwing books indoors.

“…”

Hey, I mean, since you’re here and all and we’ve gotten you in the setting so far, you could start with just … hanging around. Get to know the other girls a bit. If you wanna pitch in, then come comment on the sub corners when it makes sense. Alright? 🙂

“Alright.”

Yay. Now, come this way! Lemme show you your room. Welcome~

[Mail Call 10/7/2017] – Enterprise’s Carrier Corner

Oh hey. Everyone’s too busy for an update. Guess it’s time for another.

*Ahem*

ENTERPRISE’S CARRIER CORNER!

Not so fast Prisse. I’m not about to have someone else steal my SUB corner again. You’ve already did your SBD thing a while back.

But didn’t you say you were too busy today? I even prepared to talk a bit about Midway! The turning point of the war! Carriers were useful too! Easily the most important ship class of the war! I’m sure the readers-

Prisse… Tog’s had a long day…. You best not-

Carriers were the most important? Prisse… Lemme show you something real quick…

See that? DO YOU SEE THAT?

Yea. Carrier air has the most naval ships sunk! Woohoo! Victory through air power!

NO. LOOK HOW MANY SHIPS WERE SUNK BY SUBMARINES! LOOK AT IT.

1.6% of US Navy personnel were responsible for over HALF of enemy shipping sunk! HOW CAN YOU NOT SAY THEY WERE IMPORTANT!

…I wasn’t saying they weren’t important… I was just saying-

THE US NAVY SUBMARINE FORCE DID TO JAPAN WHAT THE KRIEGSMARINE FAILED TO DO TO ENGLAND.

PLUS! THE US SUBMARINE FORCE SUFFERED THE HIGHEST MORTALITY RATE OF ALL BRANCHES OF THE US MILITARY!

GAAAAAAH! THE US SUBMARINE SERVICE NEVER GETS ANY LOVE OKAY!? EVERYONE EITHER COMPARES BATTLESHIP STATS. AS IF IT MATTERS? HOW MANY SHIPS WERE SANK BY BATTLESHIPS DURING WORLD WAR 2? THEN YOU’VE GOT THE PEOPLE THAT GOES AND MARVELS OVER THE STRIKING POWER OF CARRIER AIR. IF THERE ARE ANY PEOPLE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN SUBMARINES, THEY’RE ALWAYS DROOLING OVER THE U-BOATS.

WHAT’D THE U-BOATS DO?

LOSE THE WAR?

ANYTHING ELSE?

I’m sorry Tautog.

Nah. I’m sorry.

The US submarine service was plenty important. I didn’t want to imply otherwise. I won’t try to take your subcorners again.

I mean, I like your sub corners! I always learn something new! This is kinda your spot to tell the world the story of US submarines, so I guess it’s really rude for me to try and take it for myself. Sorry. I should have been more considerate.

Prisse. Uh. Sorry. I blew up. I put words in your mouth. Here. Next post can be a Carrier corner if you’d like.

Oh, no need. You go do your sub corners.

Really. I insist. Go write out a carrier corner. I’ll even help you!

YEA! WE’RE THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, RIGHT? WOOHOO! UNITED WE STAND! HOORAY FOR A HAPPY ENDING! I LOVE THIS COUNTRY!

DID I MISS SOMETHING?

And Now, a Word from Batfish

Woah. You’re still awake? You should probably head to bed. You do realize that most of the dates on these updates are one day off since you always update so late, right?

You go to bed. I’ve got this. Lemme just save real quick.

Really. Just go to bed. You’re tired, you’re in no condition to update, and you spent the last few hours complaining about your workload.

Okay. Now that Tautog’s off to bed…

Things are going fine. Here. Have some Katya art.

It started out as something like this, but it ended up more like this instead.

Katya will eventually tell you the significance of this when you meet the second Soviet Subgirl.

Overall the team’s still been pretty busy. Morgane’s busy out of her mind, Sune comes home then crashes, and K9’s hit his Midterm season.

Tautog’s pretty darn busy too, running everywhere with her clipboard trying to coordinate everything. She wants to get Silent Service out by the end of 2017, which means stuff has to be finalized by the end of the month.

This is normally where Tautog would make an arsenal of democracy analogy about how we have to step up production, but we’ll see where things end up.

…Can I be real with you for a bit?

I’m a little worried. Poor Tog’s working herself sick trying to get everything done. You ever hear the story of the carpenter who wouldn’t sharpen his tools?

The carpenter tries to save time by forgoing sharpening his tools, and he ends up working twice as hard for twice the length of time since he never sharpened his tools.

Sometimes I feel like Tautog’s the carpenter. You know, I figure, if I’m going to stay up late anyway, I might as well sharpen some tools, right?

…Could you not tell Tautog I said that?

…Thanks.

Awww shucks Bats.

DIDN’T I TELL YOU TO HEAD TO BED!? GO. SHOO. BED. GET OUT OF MY ROOM.

[Mail Call] 9/27/2017 Yet Another Busy Day Edition

Today’s another busy day. Sune’s swamped with work again. We’re forcing Morgane to take a break. (Seriously breaks are basically work for her at this point.) Sima’s working his new job.

Let’s see what I can share with you guys…

Here’s the sketch for Hata that you’ve briefly met during the sub-foods sub corner.

OH. OH. OH. K9. Could you post something for me?

Sure thing Tautog.

Just a page of something I found from the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association’s databases 😉
