Silent Service X: K-21 (Katya)

Yup. A K-class subgirl. Obviously not-American.

You did ask if we’re going to do more than U.S. subgirls. The answer is yes. Silent Service’s main focus is on the Silent Service, but we do want to push the boundaries of Pacific’s world-building as well. It’s a book about subgirls after all.

Currently we are at 11/12 with about half the girls illustrated with expressions and everything else. Everyone is going to be new, so progress is good. We’re still going to come out before the vol. 3 Midway book though.

Oh. If Surcouf asks, just say I’m out on a mission. Anyways I’m going to hand this over to the other girls now. See you next time!

…Actually. Maybe I should just point out that at least she’s not stuck in lore-limbo like the Royal Navy girls are…hmph…

How’s your day been?

Normal! Thank you for asking.

…So what did you do?

Today was a fun day! I ended up placing right behind Narwhal in the cruiser submarine division in training. I’m always impressed with Narwhal – She can do things I didn’t even know were possible for cruiser subs like us, so I’m pretty excited that I finally placed right behind her. Pantera always told me that things don’t get better without a struggle first. I guess I’ll have to keep working hard and I’ll someday be able to beat Narwhal!

I finally was able to venture outside of the submarine district of Avalon and I was able to meet some new people. I didn’t know Tasha was here too! It’s good to see an old friend. She introduced me to Maury, who seems like a very friendly person. They invited me to go on a quick run together, but I figured I might not have been able to keep up. Training was very tiring after all. Dolphin pushes us hard!

I got into another fight with Dracha too. Well, it wasn’t really a fight. More of an argument? Maybe that’s too strong of a word too. We disagreed like we usually do, this time over proper attack patterns. I’d like to get to know her better, and I’m sure she does too, but every time we talk, we always end up arguing…

You know, Katya…

Yes Commander?

I always pegged you as the quiet type, but now that I got to know you a bit, you’re surprisingly talkative.

Well, I speak when I need to speak.

No, uh, I mean. You’re a lot friendlier then you come across…

Is it wrong to be friendly? I don’t have an issue talking with people. I just don’t feel the need to start conversation for the sake of conversation.

You know, there’s a stereotype about us “Russians” being cold and unfriendly and unhappy in the west. I think I understand where that is from, though. Our home is a tough, cold land and our people are too. We are as a whole I would say very practically minded and straightforward. So culturally it is very different – no different than, for instance, we think many westerners are superficially friendly, too.

W-wait, are you saying –

You’re off the hook commander. You’re very honest so of course you aren’t superficial. *giggles*

Though I do have to say, some of you have an unhealthy fascination with “beauteous bikini-clad slavic babes.” You know, your science officer, the one that is like Chester but slightly less annoying.

K21 arm crossed

Who, Andrea?

Yes. He and I had a little personal communication just earlier.

…uh oh.

Relax, commander. I do not punch very hard.

Right. *sigh* This is part of the reason why I don’t let him work in Avalon anymore. He’s got no concept of social etiquette and at this rate he’s out on medical leave more often than he’s actually here working.

What is the name of the long black-haired one, who wears golden leaves in her hair and wears that pretty nearly-see-through pinkish-cream dress?

Helena?

Well I was about to say, I did not punch Andrea. She threw him out the window before I could react. It seems to be a game the two plays.

…Katya I don’t think that’s a ga – nevermind. Thank you. Shouldn’t you head to dinner now? I’ll see to Helena.

Okay! Thanks for checking on me commander! До свида́ния!

Da svidaniya to you too, Katya!

Hello, Katya here. K9 and Morgane thought it would be good for me to get a little note section like the other girls.

I think you may be first thinking. Why a Soviet/Russian submarine? Well, for starters, many of the team is very interested in the USSR, historical or otherwise. One of our historical researchers have familiar that learned Russian and lives in a Chinese city very close to the Russian border, Zero is very interested in of course all matters communist, K9 is actually studying Russian (thanks to him we’ll get to tap into a lot more Russian things) in college, and all the team is highly appreciative of the role the USSR played in the Great Patriotic War.

So when we were talking about ideas for other foreign girls, K9 said to Morgane, “Morgane, we should have a Soviet subgirl to highlight some additional differences between the ways the Allies used submarines.”

Morgane said okay, you go do some work, and let’s make it happen and I came into being. Russian sources are always difficult to go through, so I hope you would find some of the stuff we’re about to tell you interesting.

Then, of course, they figured out a way to work me into the story. Those two read a lot, and told Sima a lot about how they wanted me to look like. Then well, here I am! You’ll start to see the historical stuff that inspired my creation very soon.

Take my name, for instance. “Katya” was the nickname that K9 gave me after reading the memoirs of a particular Soviet submarine commander. He referred to the K-class submarines as the “Katyushas”, so K9 shortened it to “Katya”.  Morgane liked it a lot, and now I have a cute girl’s name.

Oh. Originally I was going to have a much more conservative swimsuit, but when Sune got wind of everything, she said to Sima, “a Russian girl should be sexy and so you should put her in the tiniest bikini possible.”

And so I ended up wearing what I wear today. I’m not complaining, but you know, I’m glad the rest of the team keep that crazy Japanese girl’s antics in check.

Anyways. I’ll probably talk a little about the Red Navy during WW2, but more importantly, use that as an example to contrast what the U.S. Navy does. You’ll see that the training and the approach to using submarines (again) is quite different. It’s what we want to do to add depth to our book, after all.

To summarize, the Soviet submarine force did not achieve the insane kill ratios of the U.S. Silent Service or our U-boat opponents, but our performance was largely middle of the road. Generally we were worse than the U.S., Germany, and U.K, but outperformed the other countries by a fair margin. Of course, this is Silent Service. So I’m sure K9 or Morgane’ll have Tautog talk about Cold War-era submarines sometimes. Then, as I am sure you know, the USSR submarine force was much more capable.

Anyways. I’ve said a lot, so I think I’m going to call it a night here. спокойной ночи!

Silent Service VII: Trout

I did say last week that I’ll be showing up sooner or later, right?

I’m the Tambor-class subgirl Trout. I serve at the Commander’s pleasure here in Avalon base. From an out-of-the-universe perspective, I do the same. Simply swap Mike Yin out for K9catforce & Morgane and the rest of the team.

Good morning! How are you.

Good morning, commander! Actually, it’s technically still “good very-late night for me.” Before I clock out though I do have three new developments that requires your attention.

One. As you are aware sections of Avalon is currently undergoing significant build-up, and it is necessary for us to oversee the little one’s construction process. There’s been an unusual – but resolved – incident today that you need to acknowledge. Here is the form.

… I know the Dee-dees liked it a lot, and I’m sorry that we had to tear it down, but the plan specifically called for a new temporary airfield in that sector and not a set of trenches. I’m not even sure if we can get snow on Avalon so the prospective utility of a snowball fight is moot, but just do pay attention to this one too, alright? I do feel we should try to give the poor girls more stuff to do for fun here, especially since visits off-shore is extremely limited.

Two. I have revised your draft pertaining to the coordination of production and additional support to Project Trinity. The big boss certainly seems on board with it so I figure this would be a good time to push. If you can get the draft to me in … maybe six or so hours I can have it back to you before the end of the day today.

Three. There is a new intel report on Jer’s desk pertaining to the latest developments in Europe. Not saying anything else, just that it’s there. You’ll see it first thing Monday and we have the rest of your day blocked off for meetings.

To summarize, the Pan-European effort to create a shipgirl service has failed yet again, and multiple parties have reached out to us for comment and arbitration. We reported to our superiors and they threw the ball right back in our court. If you ask me –

Jer? Probably not up yet. Yeah, I know. It’s the weekend. I just enjoy my work. Besides, not to sound like the commies but I’m proud of the fact that I’m one of your finest agents on and off the field. THAT requires dedication and effort, and I’ve every intent to keep myself ready, able, and willing at all times –

*yawn*

Though, my record is hardly… sterling. Sometimes *yawn* the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

Is that breakfast I see?

Oh.

Well. With Tambor around usually nothing’s left – I see now, commander. Crafty, and much-appreciated. Why don’t you just leave the plate on my cabinet and I’ll grab a bite after this segment?

TRUIIIIIIII-TE~

Yes?

TRUITE!

I heard ya just fine, Surcouf dear. How are you?

WHY NO “SILENT SERVICE” FOR SURCOUF?

I don’t understand the question.

WHEN IS IT MY TURN?

I still don’t understand the question.

WHY AM I NOT IN BOOK!!

Ask Tautau.

SHE HAS BEEN AVOID SINCE YESTERDAY!

Um, ask Morgane?

SHE SAYS TO ASK SUNE WHO TOLD ME TO ASK K9 WHO SAY ME TO ASK MORGANE AGAIN WHO SAY TO ME TO ASK K9 WHO TOLD ME TO WAIT SINCE SOMETHING ABOUT LAYOUT AND PAGES AND TIME.

So you’re not… not in the book.

WELL I AM NOT IN BOOK YET!

Well, most of us aren’t yet either.

JE PROTESTE! LE SURCOUF WAS LARGEST AND UNIQUEST FRENCH SUBMARINE IN ALL OF THE SECONDE GUERRE! IS GREAT EXAMPLE OF SUBMARINE PRINCIPLES! ALSO HEROISM.

PLUS I HAVE SENIORITY! AM LITERALLY FIRST SUBGIRL SIMA EVER DRAW! I EVEN HAVE PLOTS! THERE WERE CHIBIS OF ME! YET BATFISH AND PAM ARE ALL GETTING REDRAWN BEFORE ME WHEN I CAME BEFORE THEM!

Well, Narwhal and The twins aren’t getting redrawn either, nor are they spotlighted in the book –

I WANT TO SEE SIMA! BRING ME TO LE CHEF! I HAVE –

You know what, dear. I see you’re upset right now. Why don’t you come with me as I drop these books off for Mike? Talk to me on the way. We can then go do something um, fun, after.

…OKAY.

Silent Service II: Cusk

Hiya Folks! K9 here. Finally got wordpress up and running, so Morgane doesn’t have to post for me. Today we’d like to show you guys a new subgirl!

How’s your day –

Commander, I’m going to need the practice range for ALL of tomorrow. Yes-yes, from 0800 to 1600! I’m on the cusp of a major breakthrough here! If this works we change all of ROCKETRY forever!

This time, it’s the real deal!

Forget what I said last time, this is new data. Look. Look here. This new fuel mixture gives us a pretty solid increase to our current range. Gonna guess we can push 20%, but even so 10% is nothing to sniff at. I’ve lowered the risk of spontaneous combustion too, just as ordered!

…30%. A reduction of 30%.

Whaddaya mean 70% is really high?

Commander this is ROCKET FUEL. Rocket. Fuel. BURN. That’s its job!

Yes, I know! Mahan’s tests concluded that the superstructure of the – it’s not pressure! It’s materials. That was the last missile. This one’s new. Totally different. Mike, are you even reading the weekly briefs the fairies are bringing to your desk?

Why do you think I’m here? You’ve GOT to let me try this. Just one more time!

No, you can’t push it to Jer. She’s already rejected the proposal three times in the past hour! It wasn’t even my proposal was bad. She’s literally getting me on technical trivialities that nobody’s followed for decades!

Aw come on, pretty please?

…okay, fine! I’ll make it “safer…”

*mumbles*

Anyway, whaddaya wanna ask?

How was your day?

Good. You could make it great if you’d just sign here and give me permission…

Okay. I’ll do it just this once –

Yay! Love ya commander, you’re the best! Just watch! It’s gonna work this time.

Tell me a bit about your namesake.

What, SS 340? You know if we’re gonna get technical I shouldn’t even be in Pacif – I mean, uh, I wouldn’t have really fallen under current paradigms of shipgirl appearances –

Right. The actual submarine. What can I say? She was a good sub. The Cusk served for twenty-four and a half years. Commissioned just slightly after – well, if we’re gonna get technical she was launched on July 28th of 1945 – World War II, she’s famous for being the world’s first missile submarine.

That’s right. She launched the first guided missile from a submarine in 1947. Affectionately known as the “Loon,” the LTV-N-2 missile was an improved copy of the German V1 Buzz Bomb. Yeah. That thing. Hitler’s terror weapon. Horribly inaccurate but it managed to give the Brits quite the scare. Anyways, by the end of the war, we managed to capture a few and study it. The brass thought it’d make the perfect stealth weapon if one could just launch it from a submarine, and that’s exactly what the Cusk accomplished.

Basically, as one of the first guided missiles built by the navy, it provided the US with a lot of practical knowledge regarding missile design and development. Pretty much all the advanced stuff that came later have the Loon to thank for, and I’d go as far as to say that it’s one of the top three weapons of war that permanently changed the fate of the world. The ability for a submarine to carry ballistic missiles anywhere around the globe and launch them at a moment’s notice … Need I say more?

Anyways. The Cusk then did her time, and did what a submarine was asked to do. Unlike me, she completed all of her missions more or less flawlessly –

D’aww, just like me? Now you’re making me blush. So you did read the reports after all!

Pro~gress~

How do you feel about the coming Abyssal War?

Victory through technology. If we’re gonna beat the uglies we’re going to have to push our gear to the limit. We only have so many shipgirls that can be deployed at a time. Something like the Loon would easily turn the tide if we can get the thing working and the little ones to start mass producing this stuff – preferably before they show up in force.

So, this girl was actually Sima’s idea. Sima found some info on the Loon and decided that she would be an interesting girl to cover. Morgane and I agreed, and here we are! Cusk. I think she looks great.

When I saw Sima’s first Cusk draft, the first thing that came to mind was the half-brilliant half-crazy aviation and space pioneers that I oh-so wanted to be when I was little. The run up to build speed, the throwing arm cocked back and ready to throw, the look of pure joy on her face from the sheer fun of not knowing what will happen next… She’s living my childhood dream. I can’t help but smile when I see Cusk. Sima’s really gotten better, being able to communicate these things by drawing. Morgane, being an actual scientist, is having a lot of fun with her too. She knows just how to make Cusk the best character she can be, and she’s done a lot more with Cusk than I ever could. (She’s the one who wrote most of the introduction up there!)

Thanks to the Loon, we’ve had a lot more Jojo references. Morgane wanted to do a GERMAN SCIENCE IS BEST IN THE WORLD joke, but didn’t manage to fit it in. Actually, with the Loon we wanted to dive a bit into the whole “German technology is superior” concept. Just how much of it is true? We’ll see just what we dig up.

As a side note, a quick update for Silent Service itself. So far we’ve got 11/12 new subgirls drawn. All of the new subgirls have at least have their personality and details outlined, so from here on out it’s a matter of writing out everyone’s intro, various slice-of-life stories, and finishing up Tautog’s Sub Corner.

Oh. And getting the Bikini Calendar put together. That’s important too.

It’s a whole team effort here, and so far things are running on schedule. Morgane’s busy directing Sima and editing my works, Sune’s been chugging away at Japanese sources and generally dabbing a bit in everything, and I’ve been writing out the subgirls, stories, and sub corners.

And as always, thanks for your support too!
